Cutest Handmade Babywear You’ll Ever Find

Babywear is already cute just because of its small size. Though when you consider all the tiny details, adorable fabric and attention to detail, they turn into the cutest items of clothing you have ever seen! We buy baby clothing for all sorts of reasons. Christenings, birthdays and layettes are all special occasions we like to celebrate with a gift. A thoughtfully chosen item of kids clothing makes the perfect choice for a present for these occasions.

Should Babywear Be Gender Neutral or Gender Specific?

An article in the Ladies’ Home Journal of June 1918 said,

“The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger colour, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.”

This tradition carried on to the baby boomer years of the 1940’s. Almost all the children’s clothing in shops was either pink or blue. The more liberal women’s movement in the 60’s and 70’s saw babywear become more gender neutral. But when doctors began to be able to tell the sex of a baby before it was born, this all changed again. The 1980’s were then alive with parents wanting to decorate the nursery in pink or blue to announce the pre-arrival of their baby. But nowadays, does this longstanding tradition still apply? Should we buy baby clothing which is gender specific or not?

Actually there is no right answer. It is up to the personal choices of the parents and of course, us as the gift givers. Here at Gift Hutt we stock a wonderful selection of handmade baby in pink, blue and unisex colours. If you are wanting hand crocheted woollen baby clothing, we’ve got it all! Perhaps you’d prefer to give some knitted booties or a cosy vest? We’ve got those too! If you need some beautiful NZ merino kids and baby clothing, we stock a great range of Kruizey Kids clothing.

All our baby wear is available for purchasing online and in our Lower Hutt store. We are more than happy to help you choose the right present for the little person in your life. As for choosing between pink or blue, we’re keeping Mum on that subject for now!
